What is a resident New Jersey mare? A resident New Jersey mare is a mare that resides in New Jersey continuously from November 1 of the year prior to the foaling through the date of foaling.  A mare purchased at public auction subsequent to October 17th of the year prior to foaling, is considered a resident New Jersey mare provided that she commences residence in New Jersey within two weeks of her purchase and continuously resides in New Jersey through the date of foaling.  For the purpose of this paragraph, public auction is defined as an auction generally regarded as a public auction in the thoroughbred horse industry and recognized as same by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey.    What is a non-resident New Jersey mare? A non-resident New Jersey mare is a mare that has not returned to New Jersey by November 1 of the year prior to foaling. The resulting foal can still be registered as a New Jersey-bred provided the mare is bred to a registered New Jersey stallion the season of the birth of said foal and remain in New Jersey for a continuous period of 90 days after foaling.    How do I register my foal as a New Jersey Bred? Your foal is eligible to be registered by simply filling out an application for registration.  These forms can be obtained by contacting the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey office at (732) 542-8880 or via email at info@njbreds.com with your request and address.  You may also obtain an online application form by clicking here.    How much does it cost to register a New Jersey Bred foal? The rate varies depending on the age of the foal and whether the breeder is a member of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey.  Foals registered within 30 days of birth can be registered by members for $50 and by non-members for $150.  A member can register a foal after 30 days but prior to September 1 of the year of birth for $100 and the cost for non-members is $200.  Should you choose to register your foal after August 31 of the year of birth it will cost members $250 and non-members $350.    What happens after I register my foal? When the foal application is completed and returned to the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey you will receive a certificate of registration that must be attached to the Jockey Club registration papers.    I sold my horse before it was registered, can the new owner sign the application for registration? No.  The breeder must sign the application form.  No other signatures will be accepted. Awards will not be distributed to New Jersey-bred horses running in out-of-state contests while live thoroughbred racing is being conducted in New Jersey. Out of state breeders’ awards will only be distributed after 100% of breeders awards are paid for races held in New Jersey.    Why don’t I receive an owner’s award when my horse runs in a restricted race? Races that are restricted to New Jersey-breds carry a 25% purse enhancement than their corresponding open race.  As an example, an open maiden special weight has a purse of $40,000 while the restricted New Jersey-bred maiden special weight race is enhanced by 25% for a purse of $50,000.    How do I register a stallion in New Jersey?
